Allen Gum's SAU Baseball Team is #1

Rob Featherston says:

"I’ve linked a story below about Southern Arkansas University being the #1 ranked baseball team in NCAA Division II. Allen Gum is in his third year as the Manager of the team. It’s the first time in school history that they’ve been #1. I spoke with Allen this morning and he’s pretty excited."

HERE'S THE LINK

Here's the story in case the link goes down:

"MAGNOLIA, Ark. – For the first time in Southern Arkansas baseball history, the Muleriders have reached a new zenith, in being ranked first in the nation by both the coaches’ Collegiate Baseball and the Ping! Baseball polls released this week.

SAU’s 5-0 record this past week vaulted them to the top spot as previous No. 1 Mount Olive (N.C.) (36-4), second-ranked Sonoma State (Calif.) (29-3), and No. 3 West Alabama (29-8) all suffered losses.

Southern Arkansas’ previous high mark in collegiate baseball polls was two weeks ago when Ping! placed the Muleriders second, and the tie at No. 4 last week was their highest finish in the Collegiate Baseball poll since being affiliated with the NCAA. Prior to that, SAU ended the 1987 season at No. 3 when that team finished 46-7 and was third at the NAIA World Series.

Southern Arkansas’ mid-week doubleheader wins at East Central (Okla.) and their three-game Gulf South Conference (GSC) series sweep of Arkansas-Monticello over the weekend gave them their 21st consecutive win, one shy of the school record 22 by the 1987 team. East Central had given the Muleriders (29-3) the first of their only three losses in a 5-3 setback in the back end of a doubleheader in Magnolia February 6 after SAU had won the opener, 12-3. Southern Arkansas outscored Arkansas-Monticello by a combined 51-1 in their three games Saturday and Sunday, posting a school record for runs in the game two 31-0 win.

Southern Arkansas’ stellar season has shown up in the NCAA national statistics as well, ranking first in Division II in four categories last week and in the top 10 in 12 categories. The Muleriders came into last week leading the nation in runs per game (11.8), doubles per game (3.41), total doubles (92), and slugging percentage (.630). They were second in batting average (.377), total runs scored (318), and homeruns per game (1.56). SAU was also tied at third in sacrifice flies (24), fifth in stolen bases (76) and tied at fifth in hit by pitches (58), sixth in stolen bases per game (2.81), and tied at seventh in total homeruns (42).

Southern Arkansas Coach Allen Gum is currently 110-38 in his third season at his alma mater. His 2006 squad garnered the university’s first-ever outright GSC title in any sport when they won the conference tournament championship in his first year. Gum played two seasons (1990-1991) for the Muleriders, helping lead them to the NAIA World Series in 1991.

The No. 1 ranking by the baseball team is the second in SAU athletic history, matching that same feat by the 1981 Mulerider football team when they won their first five games under Coach Jimmy (Red) Parker.

The National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association (NCBWA) poll will not be released until Tuesday. Southern Arkansas was fourth in it last week."

Drama and Sign-ups

Last month while we were on Spring Break, our home was burglarized, and (among many other things including our car) my BHS87 laptop was stolen. So I've been reconstructing some tools, changing passwords, and remembering how everything gets done on BHS87.com. So I've been preoccupied with other things and have been a little slow with getting new sign-ups taken care of. We should be back to business-as-usual now, though.

Over the past month or so, we've had quite a few people sign up for the site. Visit their personal pages by clicking on their names.

Reunion Planning Luncheon 03/01/2007

Another planning luncheon was held on March 1st. You can see the entire set of photos here.

Tammy White reports the following:
Some of the 'usual suspects' were there: Gan, Rob, Shannon and myself. Also there that day, Pam, Michelle, Chad and Tracy. :)

Mainly that day we discussed the plans that are already in place and the percentage of 'found' classmates and our intent to continue to track down the 'missing'. Also, just caught up with each other and had a great time. :)

Second Reunion Planning Meeting - Update From Rob

*We're still looking at several options for a gathering at Homecoming on Friday, September 29th. The Class of 1986 is having their 20 Year Reunion that weekend, so it will be a good opportunity to catch up with some of their class at the same time as begin our planning in earnest. Tammy White Needham should be able to shed some light on what their class has decided to do.

*Find attached a photograph of those who attended our September lunch: back row - Kraig Mathews, Shane Gordon and Chad Radford Eiler; front row - Shannon Townzen Taylor, Dennis Hickman, Gan Nunnally, Tammy White Needham and Rob Featherston.

*As of today, August 28th, between the class website, Internet searches, the telephone book, parent's still living in the area, Gan's vast database of addresses and phone numbers at Nunnally Chevrolet and help from several others, we have located 111 classmates of the 192 member graduating class. That's 58% and doesn't include four others we have located who spent the majority of their years with our class but graduated elsewhere - Marsha Browers, Tania Nichols, Lee Taylor and Joni Thompson. Not too bad considering our reunion is still almost 11 months away!

*I'll provide an update on our Homecoming plans sometime next week after making some phone calls. Hopefully, this will also allow us some additional time to gather numerous e-mail addresses of those classmates who still live in the area but who have not yet registered on the website.

-Rob Featherston

More Pictures From Gan

Gan sent over more pictures that many of you will find interesting. There are so many pictures I decided to put them on their own pages by category. Thanks for sending them Gan!

Class Pictures - This is a set of class pictures from second through sixth grades. I'm guessing these are Gan's homeroom classes. Gan doesn't have a record of the names of the people in the pictures.

Parade Pictures - These are a few pictures from some parades. Gan says "The Benton County Queen float is LeAnn Bachman Queen, Denise Chandler, and Chris Stuckey". There's also one picture from a 1987 Valentine's Dance on this page.

Rogers Week - This is a set of pictures from Rogers Week. They appear to be Gan's gang making some signs in preparation for the big football game.

First Planning Meeting for Our 20-year Reunion

Rob Featherston sends this report from the first planning meeting for our 20-year reunion. In the future, I'll set up a page just for information about the reunion to get all of the important details in one place. (Update: I've set up the page. It's here. -James 08/18/2006)

Our first official catchup and 20-Year Reunion session was held over lunch on Thursday, July 20th at Fred's Hickory Inn in Bentonville. See the attached photographs for the twelve classmates who were there (somehow LeAnn Bachman Huff didn't make any of the pictures, though she hasn't aged a bit!). It was extremely informal as we had a great time reminiscing about the good 'ol days! Summarizing our thoughts and ideas on the reunion, here's how we left things:

*We voted to have both official and unofficial events over a four-day span from Thursday, July 19th through Sunday, July 22nd, 2007. Our thoughts were to have something both optional and informal for Thursday night and Sunday afternoon to provide flexibility for our out-of-town classmates, i.e. dinner at a restaurant or a drop-in on Thursday and maybe a brunch or picnic outing on Sunday.

*Ideas for Friday or Saturday night include perhaps a luau-type theme event at the Bentonville City Pool which would be family-inclusive. This option would definitely be family-friendly as the city does not allow alcohol at the pool and would allow children to swim. Joelle Glaysher has checked with her father, the Bentonville Parks Director, and we could utilize the pool from 6:45 p.m. through 12:00 a.m on either night. The pool would be closed for use by our class only and the city would waive the usage fee with our only fee being to compensate two lifeguards that would be required to be on duty.

*We're open to suggestions for another evening event - perhaps a sit-down dinner with a cash bar and a disc jockey. Let's be clear that nothing's set in stone yet and suggestions and ideas from all classmates are both welcome and encouraged!

*Joelle will be putting together a package for hotel rooms at the Homewood Suites by Hilton, a new hotel opening this Fall. She can definitely put together a group rate in the range of $39.00 - $69.00 per night, extremely reasonable rates for the Bentonville-Rogers market. She'll give us an update as the hotel gets closer to opening.

*We're going to try and get together this Fall for Homecoming. Homecoming is set for Friday, September 29th against Fort Smith Northside. Check back for more details as that date gets closer.

*I have started a database for our graduating class and would ask classmates to directly e-mail me their contact information at rfeatherston@cox.net. Provide your mailing address, e-mail address and telephone number. This information will be kept private and will only be used so we can contact you this winter and spring as we firm up events. If you don't wish to share this information, at the very least please register for the website through James or refer to the reunion updates on the website.

*For those of you in the area, please think about assisting with the preparation of our reunion. Besides Homecoming, we'll probably get together at least once this fall with hopes of more frequent meetings in the winter and spring.

In a nutshell, that's what I recall and I would encourage anyone who attended lunch today to add their input or correct me if I didn't remember something relevant. It was great seeing everyone and I think we're off to a good start!

Rob

PLEASE CONTRIBUTE!

BHS87.com gets over a hundred visits each month, so I know our classmates are finding the site and they're curious about how everyone is doing and what they're up to. I just wanted to post this quick plea for everyone to sign up and to share your updates. I've devoted a great deal of time to providing this forum for us to keep in touch, and I appreciate the folks who have taken the time to add their stories. But the site is not that interesting if we don't all contribute as much as possible.

If you graduated from Bentonville High School in 1987 and haven't yet signed up for the site, please do so now. It's a very simple process. Just fill out this form, and I'll get everything set up for you.

If you've signed up but haven't posted anything yet, why not? Here are the instructions in case you lost the email I sent when you signed up. If you lost your password for Blogger, just send me an email, and I'll provide it to you again. If it's just all too much to deal with figuring out how to post your updates/pictures, email them to me, and I would be glad to post them for you.

20-year Reunion

Rob Featherston reports that he and a few of our classmates are holding the first planning meeting for our 20-year class reunion. Please sign up for BHS87.com, so they can reach you through the site to keep you updated. If you have any input for them or would like to participate, feel free to email Rob.

Updates From Rob Featherston

I received an email from Rob. Here's what he had to say:

1. I've attached a photo for the home page of the website. From left to right, it's Marshall Law, Chris Mackey and myself in Mrs. Christman's Senior English class. Ralynn Driggs took the photo and it was during 'Rogers Week', hence the hideous dress!

2. Unfortunately, both Bobby Jacka and Bob Smith are deceased. Bobby was killed in an automobile accident, I believe in the early nineties, and Bob passed away in the summer of 2004. I wasn't able to get any details of his death and was very saddened to hear of his passing. I considered him a friend and had an enjoyable visit with him at our 10-year reunion.

3. Also, let me know if you would like me to pass on some newspaper links about our classmates. The Daily Record had a good article on Jason Runions several weeks ago. He's a sheriff's deputy in Bella Vista. And, Bryan Bennett's on either his second or third term with the Bentonville City Council!

I've set up a personal page for Rob. Hopefully he'll be posting some information about himself soon.

Update - Tracy Kennan

There was some concern about Tracy in New Orleans, but she sends the update below. Glad to hear it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

No, no, we're all okay! My parents had some flooding in their basement and a little at the business, but we are doing great compared to most. My husband, son and I were on vacation in New Mexico when the storm hit and so stayed their for 6 months. My family was able to join us for Christmas and we had a great time. I rent a house and we did not have any damage inside. And my business did not flood either. All we lost were our two cars and they were insured. Thanks for your concern! So many people lost so much, but we were very lucky! Hope to see you all next reunion! Tracy

Hurricane Katrina/Tracy Kennan in New Orleans?

Back when I was setting up BHS87.com, I Googled everyone from our graduating class. In keeping up with the week's events from the Gulf Coast, I just remembered that my Google search from earlier this year turned up the fact that Tracy Kennan is living in New Orleans. She hasn't signed up for bhs87.com yet, so you can't email her through the site. Here's a link to the web site for the company she owns. There is an email at the bottom of each page on the site in case anyone wants to try to reach her. I hope she's doing as well as can be expected.

Read an update from Tracy at the bottom of this page.
